It’s interesting how varied an experience people have. Some will say it’s great and brings them a ton of business with little effort. Others will tell you it’s a complete waste of time and that they had no success with it no matter how hard they tried. I have found that it all depends on your technique. If you know how to write your ads you will get some business. You just have to understand your customers, and the craigslisters are not your average customer.
I have compiled a few tips for getting the most out of your craigslist ad and I want to share them with you. If you use my methods I can promise you that you will begin to see improved results. Now there is no foolproof method, but these are tested and consistently bring good results. Give them a try for a couple weeks and see what happens. What have you got to lose?
First things first you have to understand that craigslist is a venue for local classified ads. People who shop on craigslist understand that and in fact that is why they are there. They want to deal locally for one reason or another. They are also looking to get a deal on something. Otherwise they would just go with a local brick and mortar business in their area. Another portion of Craigslisters are looking to find something that they can’t find elsewhere. So how does this help us?
If you keep those things in mind and incorporate them into your ads you will get much better results. In the end though, it all boils down to your format. The most important part is obviously your title. It should be catchy, stand out and above all it should mention one of those things we mentioned above. Mention the exact area you do business in and refer to yourself as a local. If you offer computer services or website design for example, your title might read “Your-town Local Website Designer Available Now”. This will appeal to those looking to work with locals. Trust me it works.
Along with associating yourself to a specific area, it is also good practice to mention something about low pricing or an internet special. This will draw in those that are looking for a deal. If you have something to sell that is hard to find elsewhere, let them know that right in the title. Your title is the key. It’s what attracts them to your ad over the next guys and could potentially be the deciding factor in whether or not you get the business.
Aside from that, the body of your ad should be clear, to the point and not too salesy. They want to know they are dealing with a real human being so keep the sales pitches to a minimum. That’s what your title is for. Always make sure you take the time to spell check everything before you submit. Good grammar is good business. The final tip I have for you is to make yourself easily available. Some people don’t want to email they would rather call you. Others prefer to email.
Include both a phone number and an email address for them to get in touch with you. The easier it is for them to contact you the more sales you will make. If you have a website, give them as link to that as well.
These are just a couple ways to get more from your Craigslist ads. I’m sure there are many other great techniques out there.
The important thing is to keep trying. If one thing isn’t working for you, don’t just give up altogether. A simple change to your title or ad body might make all the difference. You never know until you try.
